Prysmian Group showcases its new cable solutions with WideCap, Prysmian’s WideBand multimode fibre, at Data Centre World Asia

Cables and systems specialist Prysmian Group is showcasing its world-leading cables solutions which now incorporate WideCap Multimode Fibre for wavelength division multiplexing systems at Data Centre World Asia.

The high-capacity fibre can handle wavelengths up to 953nm, 100nm longer than conventional OM4 fibre. This ability to handle longer wavelengths adds three additional channels for increased capacity. The laser optimised WideCap multimode fibre with WDM systems transmit four times more data than legacy OM4 fiber giving it the capacity to support 100 Gbps in a single fibre to help meet the increasing amounts of data being handled by data centres.

Exponential increase in internet-connected devices and cloud systems drive the data center to migrate to higher speeds. As data centers will be looking to migrate to 40 and 100 Gbps in the near future, Prysmian’s cabling solutions with WideCap MMF offer data center owners great flexibility: WideCap cables support legacy applications based on multi-fibre infrastructure with MPO connectivity and emerging systems based on WDM with duplex connectivity.

Prysmian’s cabling solutions with WideCap fibres provides cabling simplicity for 40 and 100 Gbps speeds and a path for future four-fibre 400 Gbps break-out systems. A duplex fibre patch cord will support 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps. “High-density cabling solutions, i.e. 1.2 mm Prysmian patch cord, enter the field of 100 Gbps at low cost” says Tayfun Eren, Product Manager. “Data centre networks will be required to reach 400 Gbps in few years’ time. Prysmian’s Flextube® compact data centre cables together with WideCap fibers will allow future parallel links at 400 Gbps using only 4 fibres.”

WideCap complies with or exceeds the following standards: new WideBand multimode fibre standard TIA-492AAAE, IEC 60793-2-10 type A1a.3 Optical Fibre Specification, ISO/IEC 11801 OM4 specification.

Prysmian supports the development of high speed network in Singapore

Separate contracts awarded by Singtel and NetLink Trust

Milan, 17 May 2016 – Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cable systems industry, has been chosen to support the development of the new broadband network in Singapore.

Prysmian Group has been awarded two new contracts from two separate companies in Singapore, Singtel and NetLink Trust worth a total of around S$ 35 million (almost € 23 million) for the supply of optical fibre cables to these two different entities.

“It is through our capabilities as a global fibre and optical cables manufacturer, as well as having a strong and dedicated local presence in the region which is able to service our local customers well, that we were able to secure these great successes in Singapore”, states Ronald Wee, Commercial Director Telecom ASEAN at Prysmian Group.

The Singtel Group is Singapore and Asia’s leading communications group that provide a diverse range of services including fixed, mobile, data, internet, TV, infocomms technology (ICT) and digital solutions. The Group serves over 595 million mobile customers around the world and is one of the largest listed companies on the Singapore Exchange by market capitalization. The Group has a vast network of offices throughout Asia Pacific, Europe and the USA, and employs more than 23,000 staff worldwide.

NetLink Trust (NLT) owns the fibre network which is the foundation of Singapore’s Next Gen NBN, Singapore’s all-fibre ultra-high-speed broadband network, a project under the Intelligent National 2015 (iN2015) masterplan by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), that is capable of delivering speeds of 1Gbps and above to all homes, offices and schools across Singapore.

These two separate contracts from the two different companies consist of up to 25,000km of optical fibre cables to be installed in Singapore for the period of 2016~2018, which includes underground, flame retardant and ribbon types utilizing G652D and G657 fibres.

Prysmian ships record 1,728-fiber cable for Australian data center

Prysmian Group says it has supplied a 1,728-fiber cable for telecom and data center services supplier Vocus in a data center in Sydney, Australia. The fiber density is a record for a single cable, Prysmian asserts.

“This is a first for the telecommunications industry, globally,” said Alex West, COO at Vocus. “As part of our commitment to building the fiber network of the new millennium, we’ve been trialing this Flextube fiber cable in smaller formats for three years, and to see a world first being installed now is very exciting.”

Vocus, which serves customers in Australia and New Zealand, faced the challenge of having to cram as many fibers as possible into a single conduit during a “one shot” installation for a data center customer. Prysmian said it combined its Flextube fiber cable technology with its new BendBrightXS 200-µm fiber to enable the high fiber count. The new fiber enabled Prysmian to increase the Flextube cable’s fiber count from a previous high of 720 to the 1,728 used in this application. The cable measures 23 mm in diameter, Prysmian says.

“One of the main benefits of this cable is the reduced cost per fiber pair,” Vocus’s West continued. “It costs roughly the same to install a 1,728-fiber Flextube cable as it does to install a traditional 624-fiber loose-tube cable. Using the large-fiber-count 1,728-fiber cable more than halves the cost per installed fiber. This is a great advantage in what is a very competitive market.”
